Yes, you can put a tent on a new Nissan Xterra.  Both Yakima and Thule make crossbars for the Xterra and Frontier.  Weight limit on the rack is 125 pounds so you are limited to one of the lighter tents like a Medium Columbus or Small Maggiolina.
    We don't use the factory rack on the older Pathfinders.  Yakima crossbars with Q-Towers are rated at 165 pounds, much stronger than the factory tracks.  Nissan uprated the Pathfinder's factory rack in 2000 to 165 pounds.
